The JSE is a band that both myself and my best friend Jay Sharp are in. Along with other friends and acquaintances (Nappy, Alex, Mike, etc) We’ve been a band for over 6 years and we are gigging again. If you are in the NYC area we would love for you guys to come out.

Jay is probably one of the most talented musicians I have ever had the honor of being in the same room with let alone have as a best friend. Hes not afraid to do things that most people would stay clear of and take chances. Hes also in a band called The False Alarms…. and A Black Tie Affair…. and Cereal Hero Killer…. Tidewaterdeadfish ….Second Hand Coke…. The Awesome Patrol…. I know Im missing a band..

Anyways Im going to see him in The False Alarms tonight and it should be fun,

Here is a video of us covering a Smashing Pumpkins song

Is the Blog Dead? Am I Wasting My Time? No! I say! No!

May 27, 2009

I was sent this link:

This link (in case you dont feel like reading it) basically says if you are someone who wants to be a successful blogger to give up! Forget about it! Stop wasting your time! No one will read it!

I’ve been trying to get people to read my blog a lot the past few days I really want people to read it. I do want it to be successful. I want to have a huge following. I really think that having people who keep tabs on what I say and whats going on will be prepared when I have a cd out, or my webshow, or if I have a gig in the area and I want people to come out, if they happen to be in the area, I would love for them to come on by. The more publicity the better. I also really enjoy meeting new people.

So yeah I want to have a lot of people read this, but if it doesnt happen, is it worth it for me to stop blogging? Hell to the fucking no!

First and foremost I have always loved to write. Its what I enjoy doing. I tend to babble and as many of you have seen I can babble in my writing too. I do my best to edit but blogging is a release for me. I thoroughly enjoy it. Whether no one or a whole mess of people read it, I will STILL write. I enjoy it too much to stop. I would have posted like 5 blogs last night if I didnt restrain myself.

The link says that there are so many bloggers who are either famous or have degrees in journalism that regular people arent getting their voices heard. Really? I havent really thought that when people look for blogs that they say “gee i dont want someone I can relate to let me find some obscure journalist to read”. Im sure it happens but I know quite a few people who enjoy reading what people have in their head. Its fun.

I know if I were famous people would read it more but I would rather be the artist who had a blog before her fame than be the artist who felt obligated to write a journal to get their fans to feel some sort of bond with them. They would feel more of a bond if they go to this artists blog and see there are in fact archives of blogs that they posted before they were well known. It would be more real. I AM real.

And if cred is really what you seek I was an acting major at Suffolk Community College and when I transfered to Hunter for like a semester I changed my major to Media Arts: Journalism so I DO have a few weeks of journalism classes in my head if it makes you feel better.

Blogging is my way of expression. If no one wants to read it hey, its all good. I know my friends will if they want and thats all that matters. I feel better doing this. It helps the wheels in my head turn and be creative in other ways like music and of course writing. I have a lot going on in my life and I need to put it somewhere.

So no. The blog may be dying, but it will never die cuz Im not the only one who thinks like I do.

I Am Now On Twitter

May 27, 2009

I didnt think I would ever join Twitter. I have a crap phone. A Samsung Blast. I hate texting on it therefore I have no reason to update on Twitter. I have Facebook and I update on there my status all the time so Twitter is not necessary.

Or so I thought.

I want people to read my blog. I want a huge group of people to become regular readers and comment aficionados to my blog. I want to bring this blog to a mass group. Why? Because I want people to eventually watch my show that I want to post on here. I want people to know about my music. What I think of music. What I cook. I cant get it out there if I dont have viewers. I need to get the word out.

A friend of mine suggested Twitter. If you post on Twitter you will more than likely get people to read your blog. I’m willing to do anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get more people to subscribe or read my blog regularly?

If you are reading this and you have Twitter, for God’s Sake, add me! Macnatty is my twitter name.

Music Review: Abandoned Pools

May 26, 2009

Who you may ask? Or maybe, “Oh wow I remember them, DAAAAMN talk about early millennial nostalgia!”

Well yes, I am talking about a band that pretty much hasnt recorded anything since 2006 or so. Its ok though all bands deserve a review and so does this one!

Abandoned Pools is really a solo project by artist Tommy Walters. He was a founding member of The Eels but left do to creative and personality differences with Eels frontman, E. The project released two albums and Tommy now focuses on his new project, Glacier Hiking.

So what can I say about Abandoned Pools? Its amazing that all this sounds you get from the first album Humanistic is from the brain of one person. The album is just a fun romp of emotion. It really can not be classified into one specific genre. Theres some hardcore influences in songs like Flourecein but when I say hardcore, I think of Stabbing Westwards version of hardcore. Dark and guitar based but still managing to be pop sounding. There are indie and garage sounding tunes, You can hear bands like Stabbing Westward, Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, yes The Eels (but minimal to be honest), Deathcab for Cutie, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer in the sounds that come from this album. I hear it. All the good parts. My favorite song is Ruin Your Life. Its very Weezer meets disco sounding.

The next album Armed to the Teeth really doesnt appeal to me. Its not bad, but I just think the sound went stale. It was awesome for 2001 not great for 2006. Im not even saying that the sound didnt grow creatively, it just really lost its allure. There are good songs on there however. Its worth checking out.

I wanted to post a youtube video of Abandoned Pools but they are hard to come by. So I figured I would post this clip up.

Abandoned Pools is ALSO known for doing the theme song to the MTV Cartoon, Clone High!

So its started, my individual music critiques: A-Ha

May 25, 2009

I said I would do these eventually well here it is! My first individual music review. I am intending on doing this from a to z followed by the numbered bands (10,000 Maniacs, 30 Seconds to Mars, etc) so I start off with a band that is near and dear to my heart as a child of the 80s, A-ha.

A Norwegian band, 3 guys mainly. The video came out in like 1985 /1986 so I will say I was about 10 years old. This video comes on while Im at my friend Rhiannon’s house playing. I see it, “meh, its alright sounding, cool synths” I glance over…. “OOH a cartoon!” Rhiannon’d mom Doris comes into the room and we are all mesmerized by the video. Odd sketching of a cartoon and then reality, then back to a comic, then back to reality. We had never seen anything like it. Not to mention the song. There is a grown man hitting these notes and hes not hitting them in a funny way. I mean if you hear a guy hit those notes sometimes its for comedy but no its pivotal, its necessary, its amazing. You can feel the yearning in that fucking note. All three of us were watching history. This video was a milestone in videos. Im a 10 year old and Im CRYING at the end of the video when Morten (yes thats the lead singers name) seems to have died in the comic then you see him in her reality but still in his comic persona trying to be real, smashing himself against the walls, the doors, just trying sooo hard, and the girl is in tears and so wanting him there and finally, he gets up, hes normal, hes sweaty, hes fucking hot. I wanted this guy and I was 10 freaggin years old. I wanted to go up to the tv and kiss it!

So yes, the magic of tv worked. I barely listened to the song initially cuz I was busy playing with my friend, then I got caught up in it. Then I fell in love. Within a year AHa were stars. They were nominated for MTV Video Awards. They were uber famous. Then within a few years. I lost contact. As did most of America.

A few years ago I came across a song. The melody was cute. The song was really pretty. Very Keane sounding, fairly Coldplayish. I was being forced by a mother in the living room who wouldnt change the channel to watch this awful movie starring Liv Tyler called One Night at McCools. Oh man it was awful. Then this song came on, and I was really digging it. I knew I heard the voice before but when you think of A-Ha you think of 80s synth. When the credits roll, sure enough, its A-Ha. I download their discography. OMG

Look I loved Take On Me, still do. However through listening to their other albums since then I can tell you this much. That one song does them no justice! They are more than that song. I may be going too far but I dont care…. Keane, Coldplay… other bands like them… they would be lying if they didnt admit that A-Ha influenced them in SOME way. Listening to all their albums its all I could hear and the music came out BEFORE Coldplay or Keane came out. The music they put out now is worth the listen. A lot of 80s bands have a tendency to get stuck in their 80s sound and it gets stale and boring. A-Ha didnt let that happen. They still put out music and it is still up to par with their contemporaries. Am I saying they are better than Keane or Coldplay? No, but they are worthy adversaries. At least in my opinion.

Album that I really think you should check out should you be interested: Lifelines OR Minor Earth, Major Sky

On a vain note: Morten is over 40 and he is still a hot man. He may have had botox, I dont care, I want him on a plate please and thank you.

So I wanted to post their famous Take on Me video: sadly, youtube really stifled that possibility. Anything they have up pertaining to it is either really bad quality or not really the video.

Here is the song that got me to get their discography, its not their best song. Their most recent album Analogue has some amazing tunes and they will be coming out with a new album next month called Foot of the Mountain. Anyways, here is Velvet. The video is kinda creepy and makes me laugh for being weird so enjoy haha.

I stole this idea from Lisa.

3. My Corsage:

4. My Necklace:

5. My Shoes:

6. Location:

7. My date: Jonathan Togo from CSI Miami

8. Drink of the night: Midouri sours cuz it matches my dress

9. Song of the night: Party Hard by Andrew WK

10. The after party: I agree with Lisa <a href=”“>

I really want to have another prom. What sucks is most guys really arent down for one. Go figure.

What I love about performing

May 13, 2009

1. I love being a superstar for about an hour.
2. Something that my friends and myself created is there for others to see and enjoy.
3. I may be nervous days before the show but once Im up there its the best feeling in the world.
4. Its like an adventure. I get to see if I can sing my heart out.
5. Even if you suck, you still get to feel like a rock star.
6. When you are in a band there is a camaraderie up there that makes you feel like you have such a strong bond. Thankfully I get to perform with my best friend.
7. I love playing dress up. I get to dress however I want.
8. I think I can give Beth Ditto a run for her money.
9. As the job search is at an all time low, I feel like a million bucks.
10. I have friends that love music and are genuinely happy to listen to some coming from myself and my friends.
11. I love working hard at making my friends happy.
12. I love making new friends at shows.

Yay! Another Recipe: My flava on Chili!

May 5, 2009

So it was an inevitable that you all would see my way of making chili. Some of you may not like it but so what! Its MY chili MY WAY!!

What you need:
ground turkey meat
red kidney beans (about 3 cans)
1 can of diced tomatoes
3 cans of tomato sauce
2 chorizo chopped
1 white onion chopped
1 green pepper chopped
chili powder
curry powder
italian seasoning
a few drops of tobasco or hot sauce
2 spoonfuls of sofrito (look for it in the freezer section it may be in there depending how diverse your grocery store is)
sour cream
cheddar cheese
crackers (or tortilla chips)

Ok so the first thing you do is brown the chorizo and then brown the ground turkey meat in a big pot. Add salt. Once the meat is cooked, add the onions and peppers. Let that cook just a bit and then add the beans. The can will have a liquid in it so drain some of it out. Then drain some tomato juice from the can of diced tomatoes and add the diced tomatoes to the pot. Next, add the tomato sauce and the rest of the seasoning. Bring to a boil.
Here is what it should look like cooking:

Once its done cooking put it into your bowl and put a dollop of sour cream if you want and some shredded cheddar cheese. I personally like eating it with Tortilla Chips but uhh,, I forgot to buy them so I ate it with crackers

Ta Dah!
